    The Fibre

Pashmina, meaning 'made from wool' in Persian, is crafted from the finest cashmere fleece of the Kashmir goat, bred for millennia in the Himalayan region, including Pakistan, India, and Nepal, and also found in China, Tibet, and Mongolia.

  • Composition

The art of Pashmina weaving was revived in the 15th century. Today, Pashmina may be composed of pure Pashmina (100% cashmere) or Yangir (the fibre harvested from the Himalayan Ibex wild goat). It may also entail cashmere blends with silk and wool with varying ratios.

    Journey of Pashmina

The Pashmina journey begins in the Himalayan foothills with roaming goat herds. It involves hand-combing, wool collection, sorting, and spinning. Traditional weaving techniques, honed for centuries, create the final product, which may include hand embroidery.

    Origin

Zayn-ul-Abidin, the ruler of Kashmir in the 15th century, is considered the founder of the Pashmina. Srinagar in India remains a major centre of Pashmina, with the artisans spread along the Himalayas in Pakistan, India and Nepal.
